Before you bring the tree inside put a plastic bag on the floor. You can use a standard trash liner or buy one of the tree bags where you get your tree. Spread the bag as wide as you can. This will catch any water that may leak from the tree stand and save your floors from water damage -- it also offers a lot of peace of mind.
Cover the plastic bag with your favorite tree skirt. I use inexpensive burlap.
Put some rubber furniture pads on the legs of your tree stand. It'll keep the stand from moving and keep it from scratching your floors.
Insert tree, decorate and relax -- now there are no worries about sacrificing your beautiful floor for a beautiful Christmas tree.
